I misunderstood the -verison-info option of c++/src/Makefile.am. I presumed that I could advance the third digit of @ABI_VERSION@:13:0 to @ABI_VERSION@:13:1 and that is what led to my problem. GNU specificies that the third digit is "age" which I still don't quite understand.
