I have for 4 core and I use this without problem didn't try higher (with my Mac pro running with 12 GB and Ubuntu 10.10) I remember having try make -j 8 and or make -j 7 to compile the kernel. The result with 8 was that my UI wasn't responding anymore and with 7 it was just ok do other stuff.
