"No route to host" is a routing/network issue, so that's where you have to look. (instead of a nameserver thing) This troubleshooting needs to be done on both sides of the cable (on your gumstix and on your debian host). 1) is your usb network interface kernel modules loaded? - if you see your usb device in the output of ifconfig, you should be ok, otherwise figure out how to do that (look for modprobe/insmod/modules.conf inside any usbnet documentation you may have) 2) are the two interfaces seeing each other? - I'm not familiar with the usbnet driver, but it probably has a way of knowing that there's something on the other side. Look at the output of 'dmesg' or 'tail /var/log/messages' immediately after plugging the cable. This might also tell you if the other guy's network module isn't loaded properly. 3) is your interface setup correctly? - again, with the ifconfig command, you can figure this out : ip address, network mask, and if the interface is "up" or not. 4) routing 4a) is this the only interface on the 192.168.0.x network? (look at the output of '/sbin/ifconfig') - if not, choose another network (i.e. 192.168.1.x), or change the other interfaces. 4b) extra routes? - if you don't know about this, then this probably isn't the problem, but just in case: - "/sbin/route -n" will give you a hint here: You should only have one route for that ip/netmask combination : in other words, that interface should be the preferred way to the 192.168.0.x network. If you have an interface setup for 192.168.0.0/255.255.0.0 and this one is setup for 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0, you're ok, but if there's another 192.168.0.x/255.255.255.x, you need to fix stuff here. If this is where you are and can't figure it out, send the output of '/sbin/route -n' on both your gumstix and debian host. More than likely I'd tell you to use another network ip/mask for your usb interfaces anyhow. (such as 10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0) Hope this helps.
