If you go to the national web site and use the webbench it will produce a design for you. http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM2675.html If you punch in say 20v to 30v, 5v out at 0.8A, it comes up with a list of parts. It looks like it's only about $7.20 in parts. Two things have happened since I last looked at this (about a year ago). National has dramatically improved the parts selection that their WebBench SW produces, and the prices/availability of the components has dropped dramatically as well. So I take it back. Using something like the LM2675 is quite a viable option now.
