Hello ... I have a couple of questions regarding the gumstix. I am currently working on my senior project for FIU, we are doing a web-based pet feeder. We want to use gumstix in order to achieve the project. Here are some doubts and questions I have before buying anything: 1) The robostix is a microcontroller? 2) If the robostix is connected to the connex gumstix, do I still need the tweener board? 3) Can I use netCF to get both ethernet and WIFI connectivity? 4) Can I use the tweener board to program the gumstix and then unhook it and put another board? Without loosing anything? Here is what we want to do maybe is better to explain it and then someone can tell me what is the best way to do it and what boards to get. We want a user to login a website and be able to dispense food/water/treats to pets as well as have a live feed from the feeder. Therefore the gumstix is connected to a server via Ethernet or Wifi, users preference, connect a webcam to the gumstix to send the live feed over the net and a "microcontroller" will send the appropriate signals to the motors in order to dispense. So far I believe we need the connex board, robostix and netCF. I do not know if I can use all three together and then how would I program the gumstix. Also, how can I connect a webcam to the gumstix. Thanks! Cesar E. Perez Cesar E. Perez |

Yes - It's an ATMega128. http://docswiki.gumstix.org/Robostix > 2) If the robostix is connected to the connex gumstix, do I still need the > tweener board? It depends. Personally, I use an RS-232 level converter connected to the gumstix pins on the robostix board. If you use a tweener, it has the level converters on it, but it requires a trace to be cut to work properly with the robostix. http://docswiki.gumstix.org/Serial_adapters > 3) Can I use netCF to get both ethernet and WIFI connectivity? Yep - just be sure to poweroff the board before unplugging :) The filesystem is stored in flash on the gumstix board itself. You should also do a poweroff command before unplugging to ensure that all of your data is written propely. > Here is what we want to do maybe is better to explain it and then someone > can tell me what is the best way to do it and what boards to get. However, you can get wifi webcams like this one: <http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1134691947479&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper> I believe that the nextgen gumstix will have a USB host, but I'm not sure when it will be available. -- Dave Hylands Vancouver, BC, Canada http://www.DaveHylands.com/ |
