I am looking to buy a basix board and a thumbstix board.
What I would like to know is will I be able to connect over the thumbstix
usb from the word go or will I need a serial board and connection first to
setup usb networking?

I honestly don't recall.
I highly recommend getting one of the console boards (and null-modem
cable). Even if it does work out of the box, someday you'll make a
change that will mess it up, and you'll want the serial interface to
NOTE: the thumbstix will really only work with a connex/basix board
and not the verdex, since USB device capability doesn't work on the
verdex. I know you said you're getting a basix, so you should be fine,
but I figured it was worth pointing out.
