With RFID, anything beyond 10cm or so requires expensive readers. To get 5m would require UHF tags and a very expensive (and large) reader. I would recommend the HF/VHF transceivers that get put inside car keychains. I'm referring to the things that you can unlock your car with from 5-10m. I know that radiotronix makes some decent 315MHz and 900MHz modules, but there are LOTS of kits you can get for this. Try searching for "keyfob transceiver" or "keyfob radio."
