Well, although I did not what the problem was, switching to Putty worked.
Something wrong with the SSH Secure Shell client I guess.

Asunto: Connection closed when trying to SSH
I just received my gumstix (and etherstix) and I can succefully:
- Log in through hyperterminal (eth0 is up)
- Ping it (DHCP is working - IP 192.168.0.115)
- See the default webpage (httpd is working)
- ssh within hyperterminal (inside the root console)
BUT, when trying to ssh from my remote computer using
root@... with password gumstix, I got a..."Server responded:
ps -aux |grep drop /var/log/messages
Dec 31 16:27:54 gumstix kern.notice dropbear: password auth succeeded
for 'root' from 192.168.0.133:4812 Dec 31 16:27:54 gumstix kern.info
dropbear: exit after auth (root): bad buf_getbyte

I had the same problem - and traced it back to earlier versions of ssh -
anything 'current' (e.g. OpenSSH_3.5p1 ish) works fine - anything really
'early' (e.g. OpenSSH_2.x) appears to have issues talking to dropbear.
