This is just a quick note to say I (finally) got the Xubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy
Gibbon) based VMWare Image working.
The idea behind this thing is you can try out Xubuntu as a development
platform for GumStix Verdex / myPhone development using VMWare. The time
investment is pretty minimal; all you need do is install the VMWare
Workstation (or Player) and download the XU710_HBMOBILE003.tar.gz file
using BitTorrent. Using VMWare allows you to test out the environment
before committing changes to your "official" desktop.
More information about installing and using the "official" Homebrew
Mobile Phone Club VMWare image may be found at:
If you happen to have a copy of (X)Ubuntu installed, and you don't mind
running a script that will download and install a lot of software, you
can follow the procedure at:
to configure, install and compile a reasonably recent buildroot with
support for SFTP and DirectFB.
If you're interested in using Eclipse as the development environment for
your GumStix / myPhone projects, you can find the process I used
Finally... I encourage everyone to peruse the HOWTOs at the Homebrew
Mobile Phone Club Wiki site and see if there's anything of interest.
Please feel free to add (intelligent) comments to these pages. And
absolutely let me know if you encounter problems or errors; especially
with the VMWare stuff... I've only tested it on Windows, and am just
crossing my fingers when it comes to getting it to run under VMWare
Workstation for Linux.
