It seems as though the gumstix's usb client isn't recognized by windows until the gumstix boots up completely. This would infer that it is recognized as a ethernet gadget because of a software setting -- not a set of resistors to determine the value. In this case, would it be possible to manipulate what kind of usb device a gumstix is? |

You should be able to use the serial gadget, which makes the gumstix look like a serial port. There's also some type of storage gadget, but I haven't used it yet. To disable the ethernet gadget, edit the file /etc/network/interfaces and comment out this line: auto usb0 making it look like: #auto usb0 then it won't automatically bring up ethernet.
