Hello List, I have 3 sets of Overo Tide COMs and TOBI expansion boards and am trying to get the Ethernet interface recognized. I have tried these pre-built images: cumulus.gumstix.org_images_angstrom_developer_2011-04-15-1201 cumulus.gumstix.org_images_angstrom_factory_overo-201010200957 cumulus.gumstix.org_images_angstrom_factory_2011-03-25-1619 as well as the image: www.sakoman.com_feeds_omap3_glibc_images_overo_201010231934 as mentioned here: http://old.nabble.com/Problem-with-Ethernet-on-Overo-Water-and-Tobi-td30133866.html#a30133866 In each, the LAN9221 Ethernet does not seem to be recognized by u-boot nor the Linux kernel (quiet smsc911x module output, does not create the device file, etc). Here is the console output when booting the Sakkoman image: ----------------------------------- Texas Instruments X-Loader 1.4.4ss (Mar 25 2011 - 15:35:41) No NAND detected OMAP3530-GP ES3.1 Board revision: 1 Reading boot sector Loading u-boot.bin from mmc U-Boot 2010.09 (Mar 25 2011 - 15:02:51) OMAP3530-GP ES3.1, CPU-OPP2, L3-165MHz, Max CPU Clock 720 mHz Gumstix Overo board + LPDDR/NAND I2C: ready DRAM: 512 MiB NAND: 0 MiB *** Warning - bad CRC or NAND, using default environment In: serial Out: serial Err: serial Board revision: 1 Direct connection on mmc2 No EEPROM on expansion board Die ID #41000004000000000403990c0a003012 Net: smc911x: Invalid chip endian 0x8765c321 No ethernet found. Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0 ----------------------------------- You'll notice the 'Net: smc911x: Invalid chip endian 0x8765c321' and especially ominous 'No ethernet found.' lines. Apparently, both u-boot and the Linux kernel query the Ethernet hardware at a particular address and expect '0x87654321' to be there. Each of the 3 Tobi's I have return different, consistently incorrect values between images and boots. When the linux kernel boots I read smsc911x: Driver version 2008-10-21. smsc911x: Driver version 2008-10-21. so the image(s) I am using have the LAN9221 driver compiled into the kernel though it does not recognize the hardware, create the device file, etc. The only path forward I see is presented here: http://old.nabble.com/-U-Boot--Net%3A-smc911x%3A-Invalid-chip-endian-0x04980498-No-ethernet-found.-td31375784.html Which suggests trying the latest u-boot '2011.03'. I am a little confused by this however as you can read in my console output 'U-Boot 2010.09 (Mar 25 2011 - 15:35:41)' U-Boot is already 2011.03 = Mar 25 2011? Any pointers? Thanks! Andy |

Hi Andy, I am having the same problem as yours with my Tide + Tobi board, did you manage to solve it somehow? I appreciate if you could share. Cheers, - Mahdi. Mahdi, My problem was bad COMs. I was lucky enough to have several other known working expansions boards and COMS and so was able to swap and test to isolate the fault. I had 2/4 bad COMs and 4/4 good Tobis but others have recently reported their problem was the Tobi so YMMV. If possible, test them against known working hardware - otherwise maybe try and return both. Best, Andy |

Hi Mahdi, i've the same problem and also lot's of different COMs and expansion boards to finally figure out that the problem was a bad OVERO Tide COM with a label telling me: W/0 27834 11-25 GS3503T-R2889 INN W/O# 70445 The other three Tide boards with the same label (and hence same manufacturing date) seem to work well. Why should this be an issue with u-boot when the other COMs work well with it? I currently have u-boot 2010-09 (Nov 15 2010) running on my gumstix.
