I don't know much about the tinx project... I think that you X server is running and that you have no window manager. Matchbox is a small window manger - and you have a failure shown for that. Is there a package for matchbox (and the other failures) in menuconfig? Greg -----Original Message----- From: gum...@li... [mailto:gum...@li...] On Behalf Of Thomas K. Subject: [Gumstix-users] Getting TinyX to Work as a GUI on Verdex withSamsung display I'm trying to set up a GUI for my Verdex. I've gotten tinyx, along with DirectFB to compile and have them loaded on my gumstix. I had to change the bootargs to: console=3DttyS0,115200n8 root=3D1f01 rootfstype=3Djffs2 = reboot=3Dcold,hard video=3Dpxafb:mode:480x272-16,active,color,hsynclen:41,right:8,left:4,upp= e r:2,lower:4,vsynclen:10,pixclock:108696,pixclockpol:0 When I run startx, I get the following: Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/, removing from list! Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/, removing from list! Hi Chris, > Can you send me the link for that Open Embedded project? www.gumstix.net just seems to be under construction and I can't find the content you are referring to. http://www.gumstix.net/Software/cat/Getting-started/32.html > The application I am planning for really just needs test display. Is there an easy way to change the fonts or colors (background and text colors) on the Samsung screen? That depends on what you call easy :) I've used the gd graphics library to draw images and then write them to /dev/fb0 which I had previously mmap() ed. I have some sample code that uses gd to draw shapes and text to the display, but I've never tested it with the verdex + samsung display. I can forward on the sample code if you're interested. Chris |

Hi Greg, I would like to know a simple answer to this one as well. There is Microwin and RXVT in the Buildroot Menuconfig, but I haven't been able to get the build root to compile with either of these selected. I am trying to see if I can manually compile Matchbox right now for manual installation on the Gumstix. regards, Chris Unmonitored wrote: > > I don't know much about the tinx project... Hi Thomas, Yep - completely my experience. The thing is TinyX can't do anything by itself. As with any X Server, you need a Window Manager to go along with it - like MicroWin, Matchbox, Qtopia or several others that are out there for embedded devices. So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to get Matchbox to compile against the toolchain and I need to go back and check on the other window managers. I agree that these entries shouldn't be in the Buildroot if they can't be compiled. regards, Chris Thomas K. Bailey wrote: > > I tried long and hard to get Microwin to compile and gave up. Hi Guys, As you've noticed, the tinyx and microwin packages are broken in the current buildroot (in fact, I don't think they've ever worked). The gumstix buildroot is a fork from the main uclibc buildroot, which is made to compile for lots of arches other than ARM and gumstix. So some of the packages are just migration artifacts from the original buildroot. There are alternatives for getting tinyx and matchbox running for gumstix. If you are comfortable with linux in general and have a decent working knowledge of cross compiling then you should checkout the Openembedded based gumstix build at gumstix.net Just follow the quick start instructions and build the 'gumstix-X11-image' which will give you tinyx + matchbox + cairo + gtk etc. It currently is just over 16MB in size, so it will only fit on a verdex xl6, but work is being done to make it lighter. I've used this procedure on a number of machines with great success. If you want to stick with buildroot you can checkout my branch from the gumstix svn which contains packages to build tinyx based on x1167 and will also build matchbox, cairo, etc., but I should warn you that it too is outdated and won't build without some manual intervention. I'd really suggest going the OE route, but if you want to try my branch you can get it from http://svn.gumstix.com/branches/users/cdollar Chris On Jan 2, 2008 8:12 AM, Torchris <chr...@ro...> wrote: > > Hi Thomas, > > Yep - completely my experience. Well, I'm working (and I think getting closer) to directly compiling Matchbox. We'll see how that goes. In the mean time, any help you can offer on getting tinyx to use DirectFB? I've got DirectFB compiled, but I don't know how to tell the system to use DirectFB. Is it in the bootargs, or do I tell tinyx to use directfb using the command line somehow? The only way I was able to get tinyx to display was to add the 16 bit tag in the bootargs. Obviously, this makes the gumstix logo show up goofy and tinyx isn't looking to hot either. On a side note, I tried making the code changes listed in the LDD_16/LDD_17 thread from October. I noticed that some of the code was already in the kernel, and some of the other code didn't quite look right. After recompiling I didn't notice any changes in the display at all. Now that I think about it, do I need to remove the bootarg telling the system to use 16 bit? Just trying to tie together all the information floating around out there. Sincerely, Thomas K. Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] Getting TinyX to Work as a GUI on VerdexwithSamsung display Hi Guys, As you've noticed, the tinyx and microwin packages are broken in the current buildroot (in fact, I don't think they've ever worked). Absolutely remove the 16 bit boot arg. It has to be running in "18 bit" mode. Just remove any video related bootargs. The code changes in the thread do nothing more than re-offset the bits and throw away 2 of the least significant bits without telling any of the other software. Erick Thomas K. The code changes in the thread = do nothing more than re-offset the bits and throw away 2 of the least significant bits without telling any of the other software. Erick BTW I think you'll be disappointed with tinyx because it doesn't support 18bpp mode as far as I know. It didn't at least when I was messing with = it. Same was true for matchbox I believe... not 100% sure on matchbox tho. Thomas K. Bailey wrote: >=20 > Well, I'm working (and I think getting closer) to directly compiling > Matchbox. Hi Thomas, I see you have been trying to get microwindows to compile. attached is a config file which allowed me to compile it OK Basically the download from gumstix is trying to build it using PC includes The paths are correct for my machine, you will need to change them for where you stored the gumstix-buildroot Hope this helps Chris #################################################################### # Microwindows and Nano-X configuration file # # This package can be configured to run on Linux (MIPS, ARM, POWERPC or x86) # UNIX, ELKS, DJGPP, or RTEMS. # On Linux, we've got drivers for Linux 2.x framebuffers, X11, or, # svgalib for VGA hardware. # In addition, a gpm or direct serial mouse driver can be configured. # On ELKS, the bios screen driver and serial mouse driver are always used. # # Either Microwindows and/or Nano-X can be built. # Microwindows and Nano-X have several demos. # # For MSDOS makes, see mcmwin.mak and mcnanox.mak #################################################################### #################################################################### # # build target platform # # Valid ARCH values are: # # LINUX-NATIVE # LINUX-TCC # LINUX-ARM # LINUX-MIPS # LINUX-POWERPC (BIGENDIAN=Y) # LINUX-SPARC (BIGENDIAN=Y) # LINUX-SH # FREEBSD-X86 # SOLARIS (BIGENDIAN=Y) # TRIMEDIA # RTEMS # DJGPP # ELKS # # note: ELKS can't build client/server nano-X, nor widget lib # #################################################################### ARCH = LINUX-ARM BIGENDIAN = N NATIVETOOLSPREFIX = ARMTOOLSPREFIX = arm-linux- MIPSTOOLSPREFIX = mipsel-linux- POWERPCTOOLSPREFIX = powerpc-linux- SHTOOLSPREFIX = sh-linux-gnu RTEMSTOOLSPREFIX = i386-rtemself- #################################################################### # # Compiling options # #################################################################### OPTIMIZE = N DEBUG = N VERBOSE = N THREADSAFE = Y GPROF = N #################################################################### # # Libraries to build: microwin, nano-X, nanowidget, object frameworks # #################################################################### MICROWIN = Y NANOX = Y SHAREDLIBS = Y OBJFRAMEWORK = N #################################################################### # # Demos to build # #################################################################### MICROWINDEMO = Y NANOXDEMO = Y #################################################################### # # Applications to build # #################################################################### NANOWM = Y #################################################################### # # The pixeltype of the native hardware or underlying graphics library. # This definition defines the PIXELVAL to be 32, 16 or 8 bits wide. # If using Linux framebuffer, set to MWPF_TRUECOLOR0888, and use fbset. # It also enables GdArea/GrArea for this particular pixel packing format. # # define MWPF_PALETTE /* pixel is packed 8 bits 1, 4 or 8 pal index*/ # define MWPF_TRUECOLOR8888 /* pixel is packed 32 bits 8/8/8/8 truecolor w/alpha*/ # define MWPF_TRUECOLOR0888 /* pixel is packed 32 bits 8/8/8 truecolor*/ # define MWPF_TRUECOLOR888 /* pixel is packed 24 bits 8/8/8 truecolor*/ # define MWPF_TRUECOLOR565 /* pixel is packed 16 bits 5/6/5 truecolor*/ # define MWPF_TRUECOLOR555 /* pixel is packed 16 bits 5/5/5 truecolor*/ # define MWPF_TRUECOLOR332 /* pixel is packed 8 bits 3/3/2 truecolor*/ # #################################################################### SCREEN_PIXTYPE = MWPF_TRUECOLOR0888 #################################################################### # # NanoX: Put Y to the following line to link the nano-X application # with the server.
