Hey guys, Jack and Don suggest that I keep posting on here... hopefully someone can answer. I've got an overo connected thru a stagecoach. I'm connecting a usb peripheral to the usb otg port of the stagecoach. The usb device is a radio. Sometimes the gumstix connects with the radio, and other times it does not. I've learned the following in the last couple of days. First, other people are having problems with the USB OTG port. http://gumstix.8.n6.nabble.com/USB-OTG-not-working-as-host-td662224.html Second, the radio I have needs a 5V signal to let it know that a USB connection is present, and it does NOT draw any current. So, it seems that sometimes the gumstix sends the required 5V, and sometimes it does not. Third, according to the above post, I'm not using the correct cable. I've got a Standard A USB 2.0 cable coming from the radio, and I've connected that to the USB OTG port with a mini B adapter. Fourth, the connection works every single time if I put a powered usb hub in between the USB OTG and the raido. Two questions: Do i HAVE to use a powered usb hub? I'm pretty sure if I do that may kill my project. If I use the USB mini B to mini A cable on the gumstix website (and also talked about in the above mailing list post), will that "work every time" without a powered usb hub? Like, if I use that cable, then will the gumtsix know that it is a usb host "every time", and send the required 5V signal to the radio? Thanks. -Louis Morda SAIC Computer Scientist |

Why you a talking about only voltage? One of the difference between OTG aned HOST is max amperage. For OTG you can use up to 100 mA, but for HOST up to 500 mA (the maximum allowed according to USB standards), both have 5 V between 1 & 4 pins. -- Nikolay On Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 4:11 PM, Lou Morda <lmo...@gm...> wrote: > Hey guys, > > Jack and Don suggest that I keep posting on here... hopefully someone can > answer. > > I've got an overo connected thru a stagecoach. Its my understanding that the radio doesnt draw any current.. so im not sure how that applies to this situation. In all electronic circuits present current and voltage. First of all you need to know power consumption for your USB-radio, my guess is it about ~200 mA. If you don't know the power consumption of your radio, you can measure it by tester: ----USB-pin1--------------< <---------------to radio ----USB-pin2--------------< <---------------to radio ----USB-pin3--------------< <---------------to radio ----USB-pin4--------------< <TESTER in amp mode< <--------------- to radio http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml If the power consumption >100 mA you are can't use OTG port without additional power. It may be USB hub or external power from board power supply, or from USB Host. And why you are don't wanna use USB Host? -- Nikolay On Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 5:01 PM, lmo...@gm... <lmo...@gm...>wrote: > Its my understanding that the radio doesnt draw any current.. so im not > sure how that applies to this situation. This is very helpful. Thank you very much. Again my hardware knowledge is basic. The radio is powered by its own battery, not by the host. I only have experience with the Tobi board but if all OTG ports behave the same, then the OTG port will only work as host if the correct cable is plugged in while the Overo is being booted up. The cable must short the ‘id’ pin of the OTG port to ground. Hello, I want to install all the components to compile software for the gumstix on my computer. Somewhere on gumstix's website, it tells us to use the branch origin/overo for the org.embedded.dev files and somewhere else it tells to checkout origin/overo-2011.03 Then, I tried the latest bitbake (1.15.3) which complain on a few lines of bitbake.conf and other scripts so I tried 1.15.2 and 1.15.1 and 1.14 (complain on l = s.split() ) and for both org.embedded.dev branch I'm having differents errors... with 1.12 it works but I'm scared it is old and outdated ... So what is the best match to be nearly up to date ? Currently trying to compile imap3-console-image with the origin/overo-2011.03 and bitbake 1.12 ... we'll see how it works ... (bitbake gcc was successfull, see for omap3-console-image, working 1910 of 5154 tasks) Thank you Kris |

Hi Kris, Unless you absolutely need to use the OE/Yocto framework, you can give the new Linaro image a shot - http://wiki.gumstix.org/index.php?title=Installing_Linaro_Image. I also created a more descriptive version - http://www.b1gtuna.com/2012/08/installing-linaro-image-on-gumstix-overo/. It comes with the kernel 3.2 with the LXDE desktop environment. Hello, I wonder whether anyone can answer a quick question. Is it possible to damage an overo by connecting a small led directly to a GPIO pin, as described here: ? http://www.jumpnowtek.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54&Itemid=60 I'm looking through http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/omap3530.pdf which describes of the GPIO that 'The buffer strength of this IO cell is programmable (2, 4, 6, or 8 mA)' but I'm not completely sure whether the current is limited safely if the output is short circuited.
