I just purchased a cfstix pack which contains a connex 400g a waysmall-STUART and a cfstix. The serial port communication works fine and I can log in as root to the device but when I plug a USB cable to a Linux or Windows OS nothing comes up. This prevents me from creating a network bridge. ifconfig on the gumstix show usb0 and I can assign an IP adress to it. Please help. Thanks. Steve |

Thanks for your fast response. No. I am not familiar with Windows. Where do I get the usbnet drivers? I did install the usbnet under Linux. "modprobe usbnet" Then I did "ifconfig -a" but still no interface. Steve. [deletia] Hi Steve, Just in case you haven't tried it already, have a look here: http://www.gumstix.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=3Dtutorial Scroll down to the bit about "USBNet under Windows". That should help get you started. Enjoy! Andrew. -- If you don't know what to do, do something. |

Hi Michael. I added the line "alias eth1 usbnet" in /etc/modprob.conf. I then did a "modprobe eth1" and it returned no error code. I then did "ifconfig eth1" and it returned eth1: error fetching interface information: Device not found. I also tried pluggin in a device to an adjacent USB port but still no luck. I am beginning to thing this device is broken. Steve K I also tried plugging in another usb device Michael Taylor wrote: > Haven't tried it yet, but try this: > > Add a line to modules.conf, > alias eth1 usbnet > > Then do modprobe eth1 and see what happens. > > - M > > Steve Kanellis wrote: > >> Thanks for your fast response. >> >> No. I am not familiar with Windows. >> Where do I get the usbnet drivers? >> I did install the usbnet under Linux. Might this be a 2.6.15 thing? I just built the trunk from scratch and I can't get USBNet to work now. It was working fine with the previous 2.6.11 kernel. I see from the boot msgs that Ethernet Gadget is now version: "May Day 2005" as opposed to the previous version: "Equinox 2004". When in plug in the USB cable on my older gumstix I see "usb0: full speed config #1: 100mA, Ethernet Gadget, using CDC Ethernet Subset" on the console. With the gumstix I just flashed, I plug in the USB cable and nothing from the kernel... hmm... darren On Feb 17, 2006, at 8:43 AM, Steve Kanellis wrote: > Hi Michael. > I added the line "alias eth1 usbnet" in /etc/modprob.conf. > I then did a "modprobe eth1" and it returned no error code. > I then did "ifconfig eth1" and it returned > eth1: error fetching interface information: Device not found. > > I also tried pluggin in a device to an adjacent USB port but > still no luck. > I am beginning to thing this device is broken. > > Steve K > I also tried plugging in another usb device > > Michael Taylor wrote: > >> Haven't tried it yet, but try this: >> >> Add a line to modules.conf, >> alias eth1 usbnet >> >> Then do modprobe eth1 and see what happens. >> >> - M >> >> Steve Kanellis wrote: >> >>> Thanks for your fast response. >>> >>> No. I am not familiar with Windows. >>> Where do I get the usbnet drivers? >>> I did install the usbnet under Linux. I'm at rev 857. I blew away my build_arm directory and rebuilt. When I log into the gumstix via serial and do an ifconfig, usb0 is there. But when I plug it into the SUSE box, nothing happens. Can you assign the IP by hand? Plug in the cable, wait a few seconds and type 'ifconfig usb0 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX', where the several X represent an IP address that fits to the IP on the other computer (is in the same submask). If it works then, the file /etc/network/interfaces may need to be changed. Frank Darren Gibbs schrieb: > I'm at rev 857. I blew away my build_arm directory and rebuilt. I tried running USBnet on an oldish kernel and it didn't work too well. When I upgraded my kernel it all worked nicely. As Frank mentioned you'll probably need to assign IP addresses as well with commands like: On the PC: ifconfig usb0 10.0.0.1 On the gumstix: ifconfig usb0 10.0.0.2 Cheers, Paul. |

Howdy, I'm running SUSE 10.0. All of this stuff works just fine with my previous 2.6.11 build of the gumstix. I have the network config setup on the SUSE side to bring up USBNet automatically. I'll try doing some things by hand and see what happens. thanks for the suggestions! darren On Feb 26, 2006, at 3:29 PM, Paul Coldrey wrote: > Darren Gibbs wrote: >> I'm at rev 857. Hi, try to create a file 'ifcfg-usb0' in Your's '/etc/sysconfig/network/' directory on SUSE side and fill the file with the following: STARTMODE=hotplug DEVICE=usb0 ONBOOT=no BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=10.0.0.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 This should bring up hotplug connection when the GumStix is plugged in. On the GumStix side You can type something like this: ifconfig usb0 10.0.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up All of this should set up SUSE2GumStix network with static IP adresses. If You want permanent usb0 interface on GumStix side just rewrite '/etc/network/interfaces' file. Cheers, Grzegorz. Darren Gibbs wrote: > Howdy, > > I'm running SUSE 10.0. Good Morning, I did this network setup on the SUSE side months ago and it still works great (with 2.6.11 based gumstix build I have been using). I have DHCP configured for usb0 on the SUSE side so the gumstix gets an address that way. Something seems to be different on the 2.6.15 build because the gumstix doesn't respond when I plug in USB. With the 2.6.11gum build, the console spits out: "usb0: full speed config #1: 100mA, Ethernet Gadget, using CDC Ethernet Subset" when I plug USB in... with 2.6.15gum, nothing. /etc/network/interfaces looks the same on the gumstix: audo usb0 iface usb0 inet dhcp Then again someone else said that they had been using USBNet with 2.6.15, so maybe something broke between their svn checkout and mine? darren On Feb 26, 2006, at 11:33 PM, Grzegorz Latarowski wrote: > Hi, > > try to create a file 'ifcfg-usb0' in Your's '/etc/sysconfig/ > network/' directory on SUSE side and fill the file with the following: > STARTMODE=hotplug > DEVICE=usb0 > ONBOOT=no > BOOTPROTO=static > IPADDR=10.0.0.1 > NETMASK=255.255.255.0 > > This should bring up hotplug connection when the GumStix is plugged > in. I'm pretty sure the host-side requirements changed between 2.6.11 and 2.6.15, if you have RNDIS configured on the gadget side (which gumstix does by default). Two solutions would be either to turn off RNDIS on the gumstix (which you don't want anyway if you are only connecting it to a linux host) or turn on RNDIS host-side support by upgrading the host kernel & its config. Darren, once it's half-up, can you tcpdump on either host or gumstix side and see if data is flowing over the link? eg: tcpdump -s 1500 -x -v -v -v -i usb0 C On Feb 27, 2006, at 9:20 PM, Darren Gibbs wrote: > Well, this got the gumstix to wake up and see the connection, but I > wasn't able to get it to talk to the host even with manual > configuration. > > hmmmm.... > > On Feb 27, 2006, at 1:45 PM, Nhat Khai wrote: > >> I have to same problem, so I just do "modprobe -r g_ether", then >> plug the >> USB, then "modprobe g_ether" and it work!! >> >> Khai >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Craig Hughes" <cr...@gu...> >> To: <gum...@li...> >> Sent: Monday, February 27, 2006 12:16 PM >> Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] help USBNet not working >> >> >>> I'm pretty sure the host-side requirements changed between 2.6.11 >>> and >>> 2.6.15, if you have RNDIS configured on the gadget side (which >>> gumstix does by default). I had a little more luck tonight... I saw your post about the new buildroot, so I updated to the latest and rebuilt everything. I still had to unload and reload g_ether on the gumstix to notice the USB connection. Then I noticed that usb0 didn't come up automatically, so I did ifup usb0 and then the DHCP server (which I'm running manually in a shell) starting spitting out DISCOVER and OFFER messages over and over, about once every 5 seconds. (And tcpdump shows the packets.) It's never done this before with the 2.6.11 based 'stix. On the gumstix side, it seems that the address being offered by the server isn't getting used. So I killed the DCHP server and used ifconfig to give the gumstix a static IP. Still when I try to ping across I get "host unreachable". I booted up a gumstix with 2.6.11 on it, plugged it in and I see that the DHCPDISCOVER and DHCPOFFER are followed by DHCPREQUEST and DHCPACK... then I'm able to ssh across. Don't know if this points to anything... thanks for helping with this, darren On Feb 28, 2006, at 8:19 AM, Craig Hughes wrote: > Darren, > > once it's half-up, can you tcpdump on either host or gumstix side > and see if data is flowing over the link? eg: > > tcpdump -s 1500 -x -v -v -v -i usb0 > > C > > On Feb 27, 2006, at 9:20 PM, Darren Gibbs wrote: > >> Well, this got the gumstix to wake up and see the connection, but >> I wasn't able to get it to talk to the host even with manual >> configuration. >> >> hmmmm.... >> >> On Feb 27, 2006, at 1:45 PM, Nhat Khai wrote: >> >>> I have to same problem, so I just do "modprobe -r g_ether", then >>> plug the >>> USB, then "modprobe g_ether" and it work!! >>> >>> Khai >>> ----- Original Message ----- >>> From: "Craig Hughes" <cr...@gu...> >>> To: <gum...@li...> >>> Sent: Monday, February 27, 2006 12:16 PM >>> Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] help USBNet not working >>> >>> >>>> I'm pretty sure the host-side requirements changed between >>>> 2.6.11 and >>>> 2.6.15, if you have RNDIS configured on the gadget side (which >>>> gumstix does by default). Howdy, Does anyone have any more suggestions about how to further debug this? I don't think I have a problem on the host (SUSE) side since everything works well with a 2.6.11gum system. Any advice much appreciated. darren On Feb 28, 2006, at 9:10 PM, Darren Gibbs wrote: > I had a little more luck tonight...
