Ya i remember seeing something about that to, I think I may have done that when I set up the old VMware/ubuntu OE that made the working kernel for me last week. And i don't remember doing anything like that when i re-set it up on the ubunto dev box. I'll try to log in later tonight and check it out.

The only time I've had this happen is when I was using a fresh ubuntu
install for my build machine that still had /bin/sh symlinked to dash
instead of bash.  I'd check to make sure thats not the case in your
build environment.  Checking for that is well documented in the
getting started section on gumstix.net
