I do have dash linked to /bin/sh.  I recently upgraded Ubuntu from Feisty to Gutsy.  That is when the -e started to show up for me.

try on your build system (desktop)

ls -l  /bin/sh

if it doesn't link to bash we may have found our common problem

I still don't know what version of dhcp tarball to resolve! any ideas?
