I don't even see tty.usb after the driver install.  Let me explain the process that I used.
  1. cd /system/library/extensions and to see FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext installed
  2. download VCP driver from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm (64 bit intel version for OS 10.6)
  3. remove default FTDIUSBSerialDriver using sudo rm -r FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext.  The method you suggested wouldn't allow me to remove it for some reason so i used rm command instead.  I was getting this error:                                         (kernel) Kext com.FTDI.driver.FTDIUSBSerialDriver not found for unload request.
Failed to unload com.FTDI.driver.FTDIUSBSerialDriver - (libkern/kext) not found.

  4. installed new driver.
  5. restarted computer.
  6. sudo chgrp -R wheel FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext to make sure it is owned by root and wheel
  7. ls /dev/tty.* to check or tty.usb but still only seeing tty.bluetooth
I am using the verdex PRO XL6P board

My next step was to try and edit the driver to allow mac to support it following this instruction:

Josh,

So what exactly doesn't work.  If you aren't seeing tty.usb then it doesn't have to do with the verdex pro.

Can you tell me a little about the setup what expansion board you are using?

Thanks,
Bryan

Bryan,

I tried removing the default FTDI driver then installing the VCP driver.  Still no luck.  Do you have any idea if the FTDI driver needs to be modified to work with the verdex pro?

Thanks.

Josh,

So on the mac the default FTDI drivers can often cause problems, so you need to remove them with:
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext
(unloads FTDIUSBSerialDriver)

Command. Then as you mention install the latest VCP driver from FTDI.

At that point plug in your FTDI device and run the command
ls /dev/tty.*
(lists all connected tty devices)

Which should give you something like this:
/dev/tty.Bluetooth-Modem    /dev/tty.usbserial-A600JTXA
/dev/tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync

The tty.usbserial is what you want to connect with using screen or whatever console program you want.
screen /dev/tty.usbserial-A600JTXA 115200
(connects to usbserial device at 115200 baud rate, use ctrl-A and then ctrl-\ to exit screen)

Hope that helps,
Bryan

I'm trying to get my Mac, using OS X 6, to recognize my verdex board.  I researched that I needed to install the FTDI USB serial driver (VCP driver) .  Tried this, but still no luck.  I have a serial to usb converter for my mac and i have the usb supplying the power to the board.  After the install I tried looking for the device ID through the apple system profiler and can't find it.  Am I missing a step?

Thanks.
