root@overo:~# iwconfig

You need to have an internet connection before trying to update.

if you do
 ifconfig
 and
 iwconfig

what do you get ?

Do you have a valid internet ip address ? and not just a private or
169.xxx.xxx.xxx address

Have you gone through this ?
