Do you live in a densely populated area?

Many routers use channel 11 as default resulting in a very crowded channel.  It may be that while a laptop with a much higher performance radio setup is able to pick your signal out of the noise, the tiny gumstix just can't see it well enough.  Changing channels would be a reasonable fix to this.

Just an idea...

Frustratingly enough, it may sometimes just see the network, but be unable to connect, other times it won't even see the network in question at all...

Also, perhaps this is a limitation of the Wifi module on the Gumstix? Perhaps it can not operate properly in the upper frequencies? Dunno. I leave that to the Gods at Gumstix.
