I don't know, but I think using XMPP will be majorly over complicating things unless you expect to be able to control your robot using GTalk or other IM clients or through Google Wave.

JSON or JSON-RPC - or even your own format will be much much simpler, easier to parse, easier to debug.

Perhaps someone else will pop up and say otherwise.

P.S. If you happen to come across mention of YAML, YAML parses JSON.
