i did try the command for remove brltty, but it says that the package has not been installed and so it wont be removed. i am here trying to use the serial port as i have not yet loaded the usbnet module.

i did try ls /dev/ttyU* to check for usb ports but none were found

as such once i plug in the system i cant type in anything. so the idea of typing dmesg couldnt be completed ??

What may be happening is the port is not being added due to the brltty package.  brltty is a software package that does allows the use of a braille display.  To use a serial->usb device you need to uninstall that.

sudo apt-get remove brltty

You could check and see what is happening by typing dmesg right after plugging in the device, if I remember correctly if the brltty package is removing the device it says something to that effect.

The other thing is that if you typed
ls /dev/ttys*
it would not list /dev/ttyUSB0 because that wouldn't match /dev/ttys*.. you may simply have a typo in your message though.

hello

yes i did ls. and i can see many ports.

so i did ls for ttys* and i got S0, S1, S2, S3 ports available.

there are no ttyusb* ports.

or is there anyway to know what the serial port might be called. or how do i assign the right port.

I wonder is vmware properly allowing ubuntu to access the usb port?
I can't imagine the virtual serial port would be called ttyS0 anyway.
If you type:

ls /dev/tty*

You will see a list of tty ports that are defined, if the usb>serial
adapter is working it will have its own file here, I'd imagine it will
be one called ttyusb0 or something (at least thats how it is on the mac,
I've not used a usb>serial on linux).

If it were me, I'd start with a real install of ubuntu rather than in a
vm, it can only add to the uncertainties...
