oh yeah, indeed, that makes sense. since ${3254736} doesn't exist, the command interpreter ignored that, thus I need one more argument for cp command. And in this case, I just accidently let .b becomes an argument.

That makes sense to me now. In the first attempt, since you referenced a non-existing variable, there was nothing to add to the command line. The cp command requires exactly three arguments (source, destination, length), and in your case the ".b" was being treated as the first argument.
