I use VMWare and either VMWare Appliances or my own snapshots reguarly.

The only difference I can see with this approach is that someone else controls your toolchains etc? Would you really want that when building commercial products? I mean, someone messes up a bunch of dependencies or somesuch and you "reap the rewards"?

And then there's the security issue.
