A neat cable I recently got takes care of conversion between RS232 and the 1.8V UART that Gumstix Overo uses.  Using this cable gets around the need for RS232 tranceiver and logic level conversion I’ve had to do in the past (for example when I want to talk between my Linux or Windows box and Gumstix Overo).  They also sell other models to go between RS232 and 3.3V or 5V UART levels.
