I have a the same card and have had a lot of trouble too. I have never seen that error message exactly. One thing I discovered is that changing settings on the wlan0 interface is bad news. It generally makes wtools behave erratically and the card seems to stop communicating with the computer.
I have had better luck with wifi0, the other interface mentioned in the error message. I can get that to attach to open networks although it sometimes doesn't seem to care what SSID I specified. I haven't had any luck getting it to completely join a WEP or WPA protected network though. It joins the network well enough to publish ZeroConf services but never gets an IP and the gumstix seems to act weirdly.
Hope that helps,
P.S. If anyone has any ideas about the WPA network bit I am all ears. I hope its just a a configuration bungle on my part, but I am stuck trying to figure it out.

The gumstix wiki indicates that some individuals have been able to use the Ambicom (known here in the US as Global Wireless) WL110CFC on a gumstix. Unfortunately, we get the following error when trying to load the wlan0 interface:
hostap_cs: Registered netdevice wifi0 hostap_cs: index 0x01: Vcc 5.0, irq 49, io 0xc4860000-0xc486003f prism2_enable_aux_port: was not enabled!? prism2_enable_aux_port(0) timed out hostap_cs: Initialization failed
We even tried upgrading to the newest version of hostap suite. We also get this warning:
Warning: Driver for device wifi0 recommend version 18 of Wireless Extension, but has been compiled with version 17, therefore some driver features may not be available
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
