With latest svn, I used 8.10 Ubuntu intrepid 64bit. I downgraded my gcc to 4.1 then applied the patches for fedora 9 (found also useful for Suse), I was able to bitbake the basic image. I OpenSuse I tries the same procedure it worked then I tried it with gcc 4.3 and still it worked.

FWIW, I've been trying to build stuff on Ubuntu 8.10 and had worked  
thru a few issues. But, I've continued to have problems, such as
building the helloworld example.

For giggles I installed a 8.04LTS server can on my machine and have
been able to successfully run through everything with no issues.
