Hi Blaine,
if you are still interested, I use the Kernel 2.6.39 from August 2011 and wifi (WEP secure, static IP) works mainly well. I always have the wifi ready(wlan1) at the end of the boot, but the wifi disconnects after few minutes if I do not use it, like you, but it is not a big issue for me.

I did like this, inspiring me from http://gumstix.8.n6.nabble.com/WiFi-problems-td564654.html and maybe somewhere else:
remove NetworkManager, edit /etc/network/interfaces, add a script in /etc/init.d which will scan and ifdown/up

Let me know if you want all the details.

Hi everyone. We've had a hell of a time getting the wifi up and running on our overo board.

None of the new images, console desktop or gnome, would work for us. The main problem is that the wifi doesn't come up right away, and when it does we have to wait after an arbitrary delay of 1-4 minutes before the hardware starts to respond. ifup/ifdown randomly don't work until it finally does with no message to dmesg. Once it works, it tends to work fine. It is inconsistent and annoying. We get messages like "wlan0 not found" or "link not ready", etc.

We still get wifi disconnect every 2-3 minutes. But running a ping command in the background every 30 seconds solves this problem. A stupid hack but whatever, it works for now. "ping -i 30 google.com" works for now. Very annoying, but at least we're up. The worst part is that at one point this problem "went away" without us needing to do anything. That's the worst kind of solution...

We finally went back to a 2 year old image.
  1. Remove the NetworkManager (networkmanager) package
  2. Uncomment the necessary lines in /etc/network/interfaces
/etc/init.d/networking restart now works fine, every time. Auto-connect on boot.

Here is the image we used (basically it's the stock image that ships with overo): http://cumulus.gumstix.org/images/angstrom/factory/overo-201010200957/

Kernel 2.6.34 desktop. Pre-built.

In summary: No modern image will work. Going back to pre-built 2.6.34 desktop works fine.
