Not a bad idea - although there is a learning curve for matlab.  There is a free program OCTAVE which is essentially a free version of matlab.  One great thing about these programs is the easy ability do make plots of the data (as simple as "plot(X,Y);".  Thus it is trivial to see the effect of the various manipulations you are doing.

before you start spending time coding on the overo, i would highly recommend
you try your algorithm out in matlab (if you have access to it). I would
suggest that you should you consider "coding" on an embedded system only
when you have completely nailed down the exact algorithm.

otherwise, you might end up fighting with too many issues: hardware /
software / algorithm and debugging might be a major headache.

Hi,

I am planning to build a small tool for my self . :) . I play piano and
have
difficulty in order to understand chords when some one plays it or sings
on
a particular scale. I thought to build a program which would recognise
the
input frequency of the audio so that it may be coverted to the correct
mapping of the relavant note. I have gumstix Overo.Any thoughts?

Have you tried the jaaa app that is in the desktop image? It will let
you look at the spectrum of the audio input.

Steve
