How to I supress the kernel messages/debug strings from being sent to ttyS0? does this require a kernel rebuild? or is there a cmdline file I can edit somewhere on the fs?

For the kernel messages, you can change the u-boot "bootargs" variable to set console to something other than /dev/ttyS0

For u-boot messages, you'll need to set the "silent" u-boot variable, or else redirect the u-boot console by setting the stdout/stderr variables.  There are more details on silent booting in the u-boot docs.
