Bandwidth is a lot more important to me than range.  I need to move around 30MB/min (~3.7Mbit/sec) worth of data from the plane back to the ground.  The max range that the plane flies from ground base is around 2000', so 802.11b /g is optimal, .11a would be really stretched for range.   I have found several proprietary 900MHz wireless systems that claim throughput of 50Mbit/sec, but they all reside on minipci boards, and afaik there are no minipci stix....?

Instead of wifi you can look at aerocomm radio,
it works over good old serial interface,
baud rate isn't that great, but it works
up to 30 miles. That radio does not require a license,
but I'm not sure if you're legally allowed to send
images over it.
There's also ZigBee, of which I know nothing...
