I have intel dual cpu E2180 @ 2Ghz, I use debian for amd-64.
It works great and have compiled using bitbake many times.

I once had a build_root enviro setup on my Mac.  But, since the switch
to OpenEmbedded (away from the buildroot) I've gone the VM route.  I
use Ubuntu server version 8.04 and have no problems.  There are known
issues with 8.10 - so i'd advise sticking with 8.04.
