   Sorry, I don't think I can be of any help with regards to driver hacking, but I am working on a similar application, and have successfully used USB->serial devices to talk to our modems.  I don't know if this solution works for you (size constraints, etc.) but I haven't had a problem with any of the units we've deployed.
