What distribution is your host machine using?

If you don't wish to use yocto and/or bitbake, you can cross-compile
using the arm-linux-gnueabi or arm-linux-gnueabihf cross-compilers. If
using debian, you can get them from the emdebian repository


For any distro, you can use the linaro toolchain
