root@Linux root]# cd gumstix-buildroot
[root@Linux gumstix-buildroot]# make
make -j3 -C /root/gumstix-buildroot/build_arm/linux-2.6.11gum DEPMOD="/sbin/depmod" CROSS_COMPILE=/root/gumstix-buildroot/build_arm/staging_dir/bin/arm-linux-uclibc- ARCH=arm INSTALL_MOD_PATH=/root/gumstix-buildroot/build_arm/root modules_install

This is still trying to call /sbin/depmod instead of the busybox depmod.pl...

I just re-read the makefile, and it won't work right if you don't remove the linux directory and then re-make.  During one of the early build stages it either applies a patch needed to use the busybox depmod or it doesn't.  If the directory is already there, then even if you change the DEPMOD definition in the Makefile, it won't apply the patch.

so, rm -rf build_arm/linux-* and then make again
