[gscan2pdf-help] Text is washed out-hard to read

I corrected my problem of gray color around the scanned text by checking 
the "high contrast" box. Now my problem is that the text is washed out 
looking. Its hard to read. The black letters are not solid black as they 
should be.
Earlier I had some great scans but I do not know what I had done 
different. I know I did see a "unpaper" process happening but now I do 
not see how to activate it again.
I am using an Epson 4990.
How can I improve the blotchy text?
