#141 Gretl crashes after selecting "Display values" (Win.v1.9.1.)

Start gretl
Choose: File --> Open data --> Import --> Excel
Select "Numbers.xls"
Choose “Sheet 1”.
Click on “Ok”
The following message appears: “The imported data have been interpreted as undated..”.
Click “No”

In the gretl main menu:
Click “variable”
Click “Display values”
Gretl crashes.

  • The problem is that the file 'numbers.xls' doesn't contain numbers at all :-)

    In fact, all the nonempty cells are stored as strings. This confuses the gretl xls importer and eventually provokes the crash. To illustrate the problem, try opening the 'numbers2.xls' file: there should be no problem.

    This is not to say that this is not a bug. However, fixing it will require a few days.

    Fix applied in CVS and snapshots. You now get an appropriate
    error message on attempting to read from a spreadsheet that
    contains no numeric data.
