OpenOffice uses an open format for its file formats (which is actually a gzip'd XML file). You can change preferences to have your files saved in the Microsoft Office formats or save them manually (File/Save As...). MS Office can only read MS Office formats while OpenOffice can read/write many formats. Be aware that since the MS formats are proprietary, there might be problems when converting to/from those formats using OpenOffice. This tends to happen with the more complicated files. Hope this helps. You can also ask questions to the OpenOffice mailing list (see http://www.openoffice.org/) and there are people there with much more knowledge than I have about it (I'm just a happy user).
