Reflecting on the severity of this database problem I thought that I
ought to let everyone know about my specific case.
I am probably not a very typical user. I try to stay away from OS beta's
and RC's but more often than not I find myself reinstalling the previous
version so that I can get some work done! Must have been lucky or
something in the past because this is the first time that I have really
lost data. (Or lost data until Python 2.5 is out!!)
What follows is my input into the bug report that I sent in as a result
of my Gramps DB not loading. Notes in < > are being added as I write.
Alex was very quick to respond to my bug report. I only wish he had
been the bearer of better news!
Good Luck to all,
No problem with Gramps 2.1.95 until I did a complete re-install of my OS
(tried Mandriva 2007 RC1, proved to be too much of a beta, went back to
Mandriva 2006.) < By complete re-install I mean that I formated every
partition on my main hard drive.>
My Gramps data is maintained on a second HD. When I fired up <the
newly installed> Gramps received error message to effect that it could
not access the file. It did not give the "Gramps has experienced an
error" message however. I checked my file(s) and found the permisssions
were incorrect so changed them.
Re-running Gramps resulted in the error message "Gramps has experienced
Messing around, I had an old gramps db with the .gramps extension. This
loaded without problem, but of course, changed the file to a .grdb file
upon exit. Was unable to access this file on retry.
Generally speaking over the years have gone through this drill <using
Madrake/Mandriva> several (many?) times without a problem with Gramps.
It is probably something that I have failed to do, but would appreciate
your assistance it determining just what is going on here.
