Eliminating spam on the websites and mailing lists has always been a
challenge. It seems that we are always in a constant battle.
Fortunately, so far we've been able to stay ahead of most of the spam.
The big exception was the old forum site. We were using phpBB, which is
just so heavily attacked, that we just could not keep the site up.
We've had better luck with the mailing lists, which require that someone
sign up for the lists before they are allowed to post, and SourceForge
is set up to run spamassassin on the incoming email.
Since installing akismet on the blog site, it has stopped almost 8500
spam messages. You can see how spam quickly makes things get out of
We will be monitoring the new home page for spam activity as well. We
have taken special steps to try to prevent spam on this site (including
requiring email confirmation before being allowed to edit). And several
of us monitor the website daily looking for any abuse.
I would ask that everyone please help us control spam. If you find
questionable content on the web site, please inform us. And please keep
the mailing lists free of advertisements, Nigerian offers of easy money,
or other activities that are not related to genealogy and GRAMPS.
Generic requests for participation in surveys also falls outside the
scope proper use of the mailing lists.
