hello

i love this wonderful gramps!!
2 years ago i was research my family genealogy. i take 200 family and 400 people!! this is my hoppy very beautiful.
i was use software treemakerfamily but it's $$$$$ so i go to way open source like this GRAMPS.
then i use gramps import from treemakerfamily is long time fore fix and change data.. 3 months after i did fix all.
gramps works as perfect!! i was use to continue gramps for my research family.

but i'm very very very unfortunately!!!!!!!! that period i was need to formated my harddisk. but i saved all my data (/home/user/) but i dont know that gramps was hide folder like .gramps this is very very serious problem!!!!! because i dont knowwwww gramps was hide!!!! so that is late for me!!! i did formated harddisk without save the folder hide ".gramps" this is very damn!!!

i wanted to ask you :
WHY DOES GRAMPS NEED TO HIDE?????? THIS IS NOT FINE! THIS IS SERIOUS....
PLEASE PLEASE NOT HIDE ".GRAMPS" FOR DEFAULT INSTALL-PACKED GRAMPS...

WHY DOES NOT GRAMPS NEED NEW FILE-PACKED-ZIP LIKE "MYFAMILY.GRAMPS-ZIP" SAVE IN /HOME/USER/MYFAMILY.GRAMPS-ZIP ??(*.GRAMPS-ZIP IS A PACKED ALL INCLUSED: IMAGES,VIDEO,PEOPLE,FAMILY,ETC..)

see my lose my time research, i lose my energy... so i left to research family because i was sad and depress because i lose data of gramps...
so after 2 years... i did found "NAVWEB" that i was export for internet WEB!!! so i begin to glad.. but i wanted to ask you help: how i can return from NAVWEB to gramps?

i'm not remember what is version gramps 2 yaers ago...

THANK YOU! manuel

Note that Gramps does not indicate where your data is stored, just like eg your emails in an application like Thunderbird. Like thunderbird, we store in a hidden directory.

So, on backup, for that kind of applications that save data in some database (which is hidden to avoid users interacting with this complexity) of which you don't know the location, you need to do the effort of finding out where it is stored for a backup, or do a full backup of your /home/user directory.

We all will have crashes, stolen material, house that burns, ... at one time or another. Having a backup strategy for data you spend hours to create is the first thing to think about.
For gramps, this is or backup of the database directory (you see it in the preferences), or regular exports to the .gramps or .gpkg formats.
We advise the last from time to time, as we do not guarantee binary compatibility, meaning that a database from 5 years ago will be very hard to open on current computers (virtualbox to the rescue), but the .gramps file will be supported. This is another reason not to show the database to the user, and hide it, so he has to think consciously on how to backup the data in a sensible way.

Hope you can retrieve some/most of your info via the old script of Doug.
