I use "Legal Name Change", though the only ones I've recorded aren't surname adoptions such as your database. I've a few surname adoptions as Sweden abandoned patronymics, but I haven't been able to pinpoint specific dates for any of those.  Or in the case of my great grandfather, he changed his surname after coming to the US.  For about ten years, some documents use his original Swedish name and some use the name he adopted.  Right now I have that modeled as overlapping date ranges on each name.  No specific event for that one.

Greetings, and happy holidays, everyone!

Quick question: What (non-standard) event name do you use for the renaming of an individual? For example, in the Netherlands in the early 19th Century, the patronymic naming system was abolished and everyone was required to register a family name. Not many of these surname registration documents are available on-line, but I still would like to include the documents in my database when I do find them.

At the moment I'm undecided whether to use a generic "Rename" event name, or a specific "Surname Adoption" event name. So I'd like to know what others do to record the event.

Cheers! Hans
