Gramps stores data in the home directory:
For linux: ~/.gramps/
For windows: <system drive>\<userpath>\<application data>\gramps, eg:
C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Application Data\gramps

You need to backup the grampsdb directory there specifically. It is a database, so you cannot read these files. Eg on my sytem:
/home/benny/.gramps/grampsdb/4c9bb78b/
This directory contains a file name.txt with the name of that family tree, and all database tables

Hope that helps. Don't use the backup directly, only work on a copy.
