Ken,

I found a couple of bug reports:

2815: Only first page in .ps (PostScript) exporting
4164: Problem with Graphviz version 2.26.3

http://www.gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=2815
http://www.gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=4164

Looking at the code, it could well be related to your graphviz version.

The ghostscript option should be available if you have ghostscript installed.  The code just searches for the gs executable.

Nick.

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the response.  I tried generating a single page report with PDF as the output type.  it fails to open.  Then I tried with the graphviz  output type.  It fails to open in graphviz.  However, using dot the output file DOES get translated to PDF and I can open it successfully.  So I can always do that.

Is this related to the version of graphviz I am using?

Also, I don't know how to enable "pdf via ghostscript" on the mac.  Can you tell me how to enable it?  When I run it on windows I do see the option.

Ken

Ken,

The memory error could be related to generating a report with multiple pages.

I can't find the bug report at the moment.

You could try the pdf via ghostscript option, or perhaps try creating a single page report.

Nick.

Hello Benny,

Thanks for you time.  I will send the file to John.  I tried to update the version of graphviz to the latest but it fails to install.

I was able to generate the graph on a windows machine.

Probably your graphviz version on OS X has a problem.
See: https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/issues/7140

So, a memory problem. Question is why. The .gv file for simple graphs is not that that big I suppose.

Cairo is a drawing library. You could try -Tps or -Tpng as alternative output (so .ps and .png then). Updating cairo in your bundle is probably not simple. Perhaps John can provide feedback on that.

Could you mail John the .gv file you have privately, so he can create pdf of it and see if it works on his box?

Benny

Hello Benny,

Thanks for explaining about "dot" - Here's the output after running out:
klerner$ dot -Tpdf -o"out.pdf" "rel_graph3.gv"
cairo: out of memory
cairo: out of memory
cairo: out of memory
cairo: out of memory
cairo: out of memory

Similar output occurs for both complex and simple graphs.

Regards,
Ken

Hello Benny,

When I create the report using a graphviz output I end up with a .gv file.  However, that file does not render in graphviz.  It looks, to me, that the .gv file has something that looks like valid data in it.  But, the file must not be valid.

Unfortunately, I am not an expert on the mac, so I've had no luck trying to run gramps from the command line.  I am using graphviz version 2.26.

Not sure what you mean with graphviz here. To produce the pdf of the .gv file, you need the dot program:

 dot -Tpdf -o"out.pdf" "mygraph.gv"

where mygraph.gv is the .gv file you generated with Gramps. If the .gv is there on your computer, it must be a problem with your version of dot that does not succeed to interpret the .gv Gramps produced.
Try with a simple graph (eg descendants of somebody with 2 children)

Benny

Thanks,
Ken

If you start from the terminal, there is no error output you can paste?
The bug you refer to was with LaTeX output.

If you only produce the .dot file, it is also not created?

Hello,

I believe I'm experiencing this issue:

http://gramps.1791082.n4.nabble.com/cannot-generate-Relationship-Graph-td4657441.html

I'm using gramps 3.4.2-1 on mac os 10.5.8.  I can't generate
relationship graphs in any format (pdf, postscript...)

The previous version of gramps worked ok.

Is there a fix for it?

Thanks,
Ken
