Hello Dianne,

The fatal error is caused by the the memory_limit setting in php.ini. In your case it is set to 10MB, you could try to increase it to 32MB (that is the setting my provider for my live website is using) or even 128MB (I use that in my own lampp installation)
You will find the php.ini file in /opt/lampp/etc, it is a text file that you can edit. Make sure that you do that as root otherwise you can't save the changes you make.

I get the following errors when I try to upload my gramps databse file:

Warning: date() expects at least 1 parameter, 0 given
in /opt/lampp/htdocs/easter/administrator/components/com_gramps/models/gramps.php on line 96

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 10485760 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 8192 bytes)
in /opt/lampp/htdocs/easter/administrator/components/com_gramps/models/gramps.php on line 330

I think I can edit gramps.php to allow more memory to cure the second

Not sure what to do about the first one. I'm running on localhost at the
moment, using XAMPP on Ubuntu 9.10

I had a look in the archives and on sourceforge, but can't see any info

I really wasn't going to bother to convert my genealogy site to Joomla,
but your extension has persuaded me!
