it would be perfect to have an option in the settings to let gpsmid automatically switch between day and night mode (the sunrise and sunset time are already calculated in the tacho menue)

Discussion

  • Yes, but the sunrise / sunset time are not the time when it is dark outside. It's dark outside after civil twilight time. So e.g. the night mode should activate a while after sunset during civil twilight time.

The time to switch from day to night and back should be at the end or begin of the twilight - the time where it gets dark. At http://www.gandraxa.com/length_of_day.aspx are some long formulaes to calculate the twilight time from Lat / Lon and date

Simple way is to use the civil twilight definition with the sun 6° below horizon.

    cos(H) = { sin(-6°) - sin(Lat) sin(Lon) } / cos(Lat) cos(Lon)

On display menu an automatic option will be added?

This would be great to have, similarly as does Nokia OVI maps.
