Make map navigation easier with "click->drag" like google maps/google earth behavior, as well as on screen checkboxes to select the various map types (openstreetmap, nasa landsat, etc), also similar to googlemaps. I'd also suggest an auto-download map behavior if mapdata isn't available for the selected scale, with a graceful fallback if no network connection is available. I also suggest left double click to zoom in and right click to zoom out. (reasonably intuitive).

The scale in/out and zoom in/out behavior is nonintuitive, and tends to screw up the map centering . I. I'd expect whatever was in the center off the map window to be in the same place on scale in/out, but it doesNOT do that on 2.12svn and tends to shift the map left or right on scale changes which is annoying., I suggest removing the scale in/out buttons and just having the zoom button do what scale does instead, and falling back to zoom behavior when the proper resolution maps aren't downloaded or unavailable. as the two sets of buttons are confusing to the new user and overly complicate the UI.

I'd also like the ability to type in either coordinates (lat/lon), and addresses and have the map either center to that location, or select that as a waypoint.

most of this is covered by the "use 256x256 map tiles instead of 1280x1024 backdrop image" wish and is something to be left until gpsdrive 3.0.

    > right click to zoom out.

right click is already used to set the destination target.

that's not going to happen. see also the "preferred scale" slider at the bottom.
