Dear misc discussion
I have been discussing a problem wit Google Help that occurs when I
read GPX files into Google Earth (GE). The Description (aka Comment)
field does not get converted as a GE description. For large sets of
waypoints with important descriptions this led to frustrating
information loss. But if I read in (say) ucsv files the information
(from all fields) gets put into the GE description box. I am living
with this at the moment but it is not quite right. I do not need all
GPSBabel converts ucsv/csv to GPX and maintains a description field
as both description and comment. The GPX file can be read into Garmin
MapSource and other software and edited and managed and re-written as
GPX. This is very satisfactory to get spreadsheet data bases into waypoints.
My problem with GPSBabel is that when I try to overcome this problem
by converting from GPX (or csv/ucsv) to KML in GPSBabel it (also)
leaves out the description/comment information. This is very
frustrating. But when KML files from GE with descriptions developed
in GE are converted by GPSBabel to GPX the description is faithfully
converted to a repeated Description and Comment field.
My question is whether I have missed an option to write GPX
description fields as KML description fields when converting to KML.
If I have, then the information loss can be overcome until GE reads
GPX file and saves descriptions - or maybe GE uses GPSBabel anyway? :)
If this is not clear I am happy to provide a simple file or two.
