Hi, I use GPSBabel 1.4.4 Copyright (C) 2009 Robert Lipe GUI designed and contributed by S. Khai Mong LGPL Crystal Icons by Alvarado Coehlo (Using backend 1.4.4) On Windows XP. I want to use it to reduce the number of waypoints and shorten their names to 6 characters. The first thing works but the second doesn't. I specify the "Length of generated shortnames" as 6. This it what it GPSbabel shows: gpsbabel -s -w -r -t -i gpx,snlen=6,suppresswhite=1,logpoint=0,humminbirdextensions=0,garminextensions=0 -f C:/Temp/documents/exeter_green_circle.gpx -x simplify,count=125 -o gpx,snlen=6,suppresswhite=1,logpoint=0,humminbirdextensions=0,garminextensions=0 -F C:/Temp/documents/exeter_green_circle.gpx Translation successful But in the output file the waypoints (that survived) still have precisely the same names which are usually much longer than 6 characters. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks, Rudolf |

You forgot to check "synthesize short names" in "more options". My guess is that '-s' should be '-Sn'. I won't have time to investigate this for a while. Hopefully another Babel-head can help. From the code -s is short name option, -Sn is smart names option. It appears only garmin and tomtom use the smart name option. The documentation appears confused. It might help to have your input, exeter_green_circle.gpx. On 9/8/2012 9:28 AM, Robert Lipe wrote: > My guess is that '-s' should be '-Sn'. I won't have time to > investigate this for a while. Rudolf, Thanks for the file. It looks like the big green circle is 20mi SE, i.e. Dartmoor NP. The files contains names for gpx:wpt, gpx:rte, gpx:rtept elements. The gpsbabel gpx code only attempts to shorten the names of the gpx:wpt elements. You have two of these, and they already have very short names. From your file I believe you desire the gpx:rtept names to be shortened, and possible the gpx:rte element name ("Alley to pistecyclable32"). Is your desire to have the gpx:rtept names shortened, or both the gpx:rtept and gpx:rte name elements? Steve On 9/11/2012 4:17 AM, Tange, Rudolf wrote: > > Here it is. Only the rtept (these are de waypoints in the route). These two waypoints are not important and could be deleted. I only work with routes, not really with loose waypoints). Of course someone else might want this with a track (if possible). I never work with many routes, so I could easily shorten these names myself or let this happen when I put this on my gps. Of course this particular file is not important, because I already managed to do this myself. It's only important as an example. I have all understanding for it if you don't have time to make this part of the functionality of GPSBabel , but if it would be possible to do this with GPSBabel that would be very interesting for me. Then I can in the future just clean up these messy ong gpx files in one go. Rudolf From: tsteven4 [mailto:tst...@qw...] Sent: 12 September 2012 00:51 To: Tange, Rudolf Cc: gps...@li... So the shortening algorithm of EasyGPS (or is it the Garmin etrex?) is not correct. If it were OK I wouldn't need GPSBabel to do it. At the moment I've written a simple Perl program to do it.
