tonight I tried to convert a google map but got the error:
> gpsbabel -i google -f maps.html
XML Reader:Parse error at 3: mismatched tag
GPSBabel Version 1.3.4-beta20070711
Linux version 220.127.116.11-0.7-default
any help on fixing that?

Based on the ".html" on the end of your filename, I'm randomly guessing
you get if you try the sequence of commands in the documentation at
If that works, and if you followed those directions or did something
equivalent with your map and you're still having problems, please
provide more information as to the nature of the map you're trying to
convert. The full link to the specific map (the "Link to this page"
link) would be most helpful.
For what it's worth, I have a canary script that checks each morning to
make sure Google hasn't changed the rules on us, as they do every now
and then. It didn't chirp this morning, and when I ran it again a few
minutes ago it still detected no errors.
