Exactly.  The SD card is for POI and map storage only.

I don't have any experience with loading KML tracks onto the device,
but I can address this question. You can remove the SD card entirely
and it would change your ability to store tracks from gpsbabel or, for
that matter, any tracks that you can use on the device. The device can
only store 20 tracks, and only in primary memory.
